Monks and Magic

Monday, September 9th - 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Findlay Brewing Company & Jonny Burritos invites you to Monks & Magic, Monday, Sept 9. to welcome the Tibetan Buddist Monks-Lama of Gaden Shartse Monastery, Mundgod, Karnataka State, India!

From 5-8p Jonny Burritos & Millstream Alumni will showcase Tibetan featured menu items.

Joining us will also be our Findlay-local magician Nathaniel Hill showing off his skills from 5:30-6:30.

Following will be a Q&A with a few of the Tibetan monks & their translator on the beer garden, explaining the culture & fundraising missions for their 2024 tour.

The Monks' tour not only aims to educate the public about the Tibetan monks' culture and spiritual practices but also seeks to raise funds to construct a new dormitory at the monastery. Phukhang Khangtsen, one of the largest at Gaden Shartse Monastery, currently has 120 rooms for 450 monks, requiring many monks to share limited space and facilities. Funds raised during the tour will support building 60 new rooms to improve living conditions for the monks.

Gaden Monastery, founded in Tibet in 1409 by the great preacher and Tibetan Buddhist scholar Tsongkhapa, is one of the Gelug school's three Seats of Learning. After China invaded Tibet, the monastery was re-established in 1970 at Mundgod, South India. Gaden Monastery is known for the study and practice of Buddhist Sutra and Tantra, producing renowned scholars in both fields. Phukhang Khangtsen—one of 11 dormitories in Gaden Shartse Monastery—is home to 450 monks, including 100 Geshes (highest mastery). The tour aims to raise awareness and funds to support the monks and ensure they have the necessary accommodations to continue their spiritual life.
